University of Arizona Systems and Industrial Engineering undergraduate and graduate students are powerhouses and prizewinners – inside the classroom and out! Here are just a handful of the honors they garnered in 2019.

Keara Burke, who received her bachelor's degree in systems engineering in 2019, is helping NASA's OSIRIS-REx spacecraft find the perfect place to collect samples at its far-flung destination, the asteroid Bennu.

Systems engineering major Luis Gama was on the team that took the $5,000 grand prize at the 17th annual UA Engineering Design Day. Congratulations to all SIE's hardworking seniors, including those on eleven award-winning teams.

Industrial engineering master's student (and recent bachelor's degree recipient!) Chad George helped lead the UA Theme Park Entertainment Group – aka the Coaster Cats – to top prizes in engineering design and inclusive design at the Ryerson Invitational Thrill Design Competition.

Doctoral student Sara Masoud received the Outstanding Research Assistant Award from the UA Graduate and Professional Student Council in April 2019. Masoud also received a Best Paper Finalists Award at the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers’ 2018 conference and was a finalist for 2019 best paper award.

Recent alumnus Daniel Wibben was awarded a 2019 Exceptional Engineering Achievement Medal from NASA for his contributions to planetary science and the OSIRIS-REx asteroid sample return mission. His efforts have been recognized with two Guinness World Records.

Bradley Williams, who earned his MS in systems engineering from UA SIE in 2018, was named one of 30 members of the 2019 class of the Flinn-Brown Civic Leadership Academy.

The department is also grateful to W. L. Gore & Associates for their Lean Crash Course for sophomores and juniors. The students had a great time, and they look forward to next year's session.

And one final note: After being crushed two years running in Annual Student Versus Faculty Game Night, the faculty were at last victorious. Better luck in 2020, students!
