"Advancing Your Teaching through Teaching as Research and CIRTL"
Old Engineering Building, Room 400
ABSTRACT
In the realm of higher education, particularly at the University of Arizona, graduate students have unique opportunities to develop their teaching skills, which are invaluable for both academic and industrial careers. Our seminar will explore the diverse avenues through which students can enhance their teaching abilities and why these skills are crucial for personal growth and professional development. Specifically, we'll focus on two key opportunities: the "Teaching as Research" (TAR) course, offered as a one-credit hour course, and the pathway provided by the Center for the Integration of Research, Teaching, and Learning (CIRTL). These programs are designed not just to impart teaching techniques, but also to integrate them with research skills and learning strategies, thereby enriching the overall educational experience. Join us to learn how these opportunities can shape your future career in academia or industry, fostering a well-rounded, skillful approach to both teaching and professional practice.
BIOSKETCH
Dr. Winet is an associate professor of practice in the University Center for Assessment, Teaching, and Technology (UCATT) and the program director for CIRTL@UArizona, which is part of a national teaching professional development network for STEM graduate students, postdocs, and early-career faculty. She is originally from the English Department, where she served as interim assistant director of the Writing Program and taught a variety of courses in writing and rhetoric. She is deeply invested in graduate student and postdoctoral professional development and in researching best practices in teaching within higher education. Dr. Byron Hempel received his PhD in environmental engineering at the University of Arizona in 2019, having received his BS in chemistry at the University of Kentucky in 2014 and masters in the Chemical and Environmental Engineering Department at the University of Arizona in 2017. Working under Dr. Paul Blowers, his focus was on improving the classroom environment in higher education by working in the active classroom by using evidence-based teaching practices to improve student learning.
