"Optimizing Walmart’s Outbound Supply Chain from Strategy to Execution - A Grocery Case Study"
ENGR 301 | Zoom link
Abstract: As the largest retail distribution operation in the U.S., Walmart has always been at the forefront of building optimization capabilities to empower its supply chain from strategy to execution. A set of optimization models have been adopted to determine the optimal network and transformational roadmaps for the next decade. Furthermore, heuristic solution approaches have been developed to make the problem scalable. In this presentation, we will present the network strategy work in our 2023 Franz Edelman Award winning project.
Bio: Arthur Yang, Ph.D. is a senior manager of data science leading the downstream perishable network strategy project on the Centroid Data Science Team at Walmart. He joint Walmart in 2021 and has excelled at developing the optimization tools for Walmart’s long-term perishable supply chain network with step-by-step transformation roadmap. He helped Walmart’s perishable supply chain strategy team build the advanced optimization models, solution techniques, and visualization tools from the ground up. With the state-of-the-art optimization model and solution algorithm Dr. Yang built and the contribution from the Walmart Global Tech’s execution team, Walmart’s perishable project won the prestigious 2023 Franz Edelman Award, which is often referred to as the 'Nobel Prize of Operations Research. Dr. Yang holds multiple degrees from several countries, including a bachelor’s degree in applied mathematics from Xiamen University in China, a master’s degree in Financial Operational Research from the University of Edinburgh in Scotland, and a Ph.D. degree in Industrial Engineering (Operations Research) from the Ohio State University.
