Abstract: The purpose of ICAMS is to provide research and assistance to small- and medium-sized manufacturers (SMMs) in the adoption of technologies associated with industry 4.0 and digitalization. ICAMS is a functioning advanced manufacturing factory that engages with SMMs to educate and train the next generation of engineers and skilled technicians needed to ensure a successful digital transformation for the industrial supply network. ICAMS employs an interdisciplinary approach by combining various engineering and business disciplines to engage with industrial partners to overcome technology adoption issues and develop solutions to improve manufacturing competitiveness. ICAMS is an Industry 4.0 demonstration site for regional and national small and medium-sized manufacturers, a teaching lab for undergraduate and graduate engineering courses, a research environment for interdisciplinary project teams, and a technology proving grounds for distributed manufacturing.

In the age of digitalization and the fourth industrial revolution, the concept of the digital thread has captured the attention and resources of countless organizations. However, despite its growing popularity and a plethora of technologies being offered that promise to create the digital thread, no current techniques allow for the systematic uncovering of data and information flows in a way that reveals individual threads of data elements. Therefore, data element mapping and analysis (DEMA) was developed to identify all the data elements at the granularity necessary to connect digital threads. DEMA is a technology-agnostic approach that allows an enterprise to move from a functional, document-centric view of data and information flows to a data element level view, with the data elements serving as the connectors of the digital thread.

Bio: Dr. Harris is the Joe W. Forehand/Accenture Distinguished Professor and Department Chair of Industrial & Systems Engineering at Auburn University, where he teaches courses in advanced manufacturing and systems engineering. He is the director of the Interdisciplinary Center for Advanced Manufacturing Systems (ICAMS), and co-director of the Auburn University Rural Partnership Institute. Before joining the ISE faculty at Auburn, Dr. Harris was with the U.S. Army, Aviation and Missile Research, Development and Engineering Center and served as the founding Government Program Manager for the Digital Manufacturing and Design Innovation Institute (now MxD), a Presidential Initiative to increase innovation and competitiveness in U.S. manufacturing. Dr. Harris is the former director of the Manufacturing Extension Partnership Center at the University of Alabama in Huntsville. His work includes research and application in advanced manufacturing systems, model-based enterprise, industry 4.0/smart manufacturing, continuous improvement, sustainability, and supply networks. Greg has more than 40 years of experience as an industrial engineer, quality engineer, operations manager, plant manager, director of operations, and consultant in manufacturing and supply chain. He holds a bachelor’s degree in industrial engineering from Auburn University, an MBA from St. Edwards University, and his PhD in industrial and systems engineering from the University of Alabama in Huntsville. He is a registered professional engineer and a fellow of SME.
